How to Troubleshoot the Thermal Switch on a GE Clothes Dryer
- 1). Pull the dryer away from the wall and then unplug it from the wall outlet.
- 2). Remove the rear panel of the dryer by removing the screws securing it to the cabinet.
- 3). Pull the wire off the top of the thermal switch, located on the side of the heating element, above the heating element terminals.
- 4). Pull the thermal switch off the heating element terminal and remove it.
- 5). Set your multimeter to the setting that measures the lowest amount of Ohms of resistance. Calibrate the multimeter to ensure accuracy. For setting and calibration information, refer to the multimeter owner's manual.
- 6). Touch one of the probes to one of the terminals on the switch. Touch the other terminal with the other probe. If the multimeter display does not move, the thermal switch is faulty and must be replaced. If the meter does move, then the problem more than likely lies in the heating element.
