Lasik Surgery or Contact lenses?

Most of us who wear contact lenses and spectacles would and have considered the option of having laser surgery.  But is it really worth it and how safe is it?  Laser surgery is a safe procedure however any surgery will always have its risks.  Sure lasik will give you freedom from contact lenses and glasses but will it be forever?  The answer is NO. While lasik surgery can correct our distance vision, our vision for near deteriorates naturally with age, this is called presbyopia which usually occurs around the age of 45 and this is wear correction for near or computer distances may be required in the form of contact lenses or glasses, So I guess to get your money's worth for lasik it would probably be best to have this performed at an earlier age.  Cost wise Lasik is no cheap option, it costs an average of $3000 per eye for a reputable surgeon to perform the operation, so how many years supply of contact lenses is that?

Today with the competitive nature of the optical industry and the amount of online contact lens stores, contact lens prices have fallen.  In doing a comparison of contact lens prices the cheapest contact lenses I have found online in Australia is from Contact Connection. The most popular lens used today is by far Acuvue Oasys, a fortnightly lens.  Now lets see the comparison's between lasik and wearing fortnightly contact lenses.

The price for a box of Oasys lenses cost $31 which contains 6 lenses.  2 Boxes is equivalent to 3 months wear, so how long will $6000 worth of contact lenses last you? Approximately 24 years!  From an economic point of view the $6000 bill does appear quite steep and will leave most of us digging into our pockets.

Just a few things to consider before you jump the gun and go for lasik surgery.
