As a parent, you likely know that it is your job to help your child through most of the things that they do and to be there to guide them in all of their ventures and activities. If your child is taking karate classes as many children do, you may want to be there to help them with their karate classes as well. There are a number of things that you can do to help your child with their karate training and one of the biggest and most important things that you can do as a parent is to help them understand the terminology involved with martial arts.

Sometimes for some children understanding all of the terminology and the different names used in karate classes can be overwhelming as these names are in a foreign language that your child may not be familiar with. One of the most common terms your child will need to learn is the term dojo. This is the word used usually to describe the karate studio that your child is taking classes in. Another important word to know is gi this is the term used to describe the uniforms or the white robe like outfits that kids will wear during their training.

When it comes to helping your child learn and remember these terms try to help them by correcting them when they refer to their uniform as a uniform and reminding them to call it a gi by doing this and using the terms yourself you can help your child develop a strong understanding of the important martial arts terms that they will be expected to know. These aren't the only terms that your child will be expected to know either. Your child will also need to know the names of the professionals that will be working within their studio. Your childs instructor may be referred to as a joshu these are types of instructors that have been certified in karate training and typically have an advanced belt, such as a black belt. These are individuals that are highly respected within the martial arts community.

The sensei on the other hand is another type of instructor and is someone who is at the highest level of training within the martial arts community. A joshu is typically an apprentice to the sensei. The sensei may run or oversee your childs karate studio and will be honored and respected by everyone in their community. These individuals have gone under a great deal of training and have had a lot of experience in martial arts as well. With an understanding of these terms and words you can help your child get a better understanding of these terms and what they mean so they can have a more enjoyable experience with their karate training.
