Information on Medical CPR
- When the heart stops, blood flow around the body is stalled. If this continues, it can result in brain damage or death. CPR maintains a small amount of blood flow to the heart and brain.
- There are three commonly used CPR techniques: adult, child and infant (2 years old or younger). CPR can damage the developing bodies of young people, necessitating a different technique.
- CPR uses the technique of rescue breathing, colloquially known as "mouth to mouth" resuscitation. The provider gives oxygen to the distressed person's lungs through his mouth.
- The second part of CPR is the administration of chest compressions to keep oxygen-rich blood circulating to the heart and brain.
- "ABC" that stands for Airway, Breathing and Circulation. Remember this for emergency situations such as electric shock, heart attack and drowning.
