    • 1). Dig your path with the shovel. Make the path 3 feet wide, 8 inches deep and as long as you wish it to be. Remove the turf and soil from your excavation and discard it into your compost pile or other location. Walk up and down the length of the path to be sure the bottom is flat and smooth.

    • 2). Use the razor knife to cut your old carpet to fit into the bottom of the path. Lay the carpet into the bottom of your excavation to act as a weed barrier. Shovel sand into your trench. Fill the trench to the top. Level the sand with a concrete rake.

    • 3). Lay out your old tiles on the ground. Break up the tiles into 2- to 3-inch pieces with your hammer. Lay the tile pieces into the sand. Tap each piece into the sand with the handle of your hammer so that the edges are completely buried in the sand and only the top faces are showing.

    • 4). Sweep the path with your broom to remove any sand from the top of the tiles. Set the sprinkler adjustment on your hose to a light mist. Spray the entire path to wet and compact the sand, locking the tiles into place. Sweep and water your path weekly.
