How to Paint a Goose

    • 1). Using a sponge brush, paint an outline in dark taupe on the back, breast and sides of the decoy. Fill in this outline's area with dark taupe, leaving the head, neck, tail, rear end and wings bare. Paint the neck and head with black paint and then paint the bill with blue-gray paint.

    • 2). Paint dark taupe wing bars back to where the wings end, and do the same with the back bar of the decoy. Where the back bar joins the back of the neck, smooth the join by widening the back bar into a smooth triangle. This makes the decoy look more natural.

    • 3). When this has dried, paint the feather borders above in the faded gray UV paint, and paint the feather borders below with smoke gray UV paint. This replicates the glint from the natural oil in the goose's feathers. When painting the feather textures, be sure not to use excessive amounts of paint on the brush, as the paint will run and ruin the effect.

    • 4). Paint the tail feathers black and add the finishing touches to the head by painting eyes and nostrils in black paint. Paint the cheek patches with white UV paint and then paint the underside of the goose --- just below the neck and tail --- with the white UV paint also. This gives other geese flashes of white when the decoy bobs up and down in the water, which attracts them to the model.
