Outdoor Decks and Exteriors

The 141,000-ton Royal Princess carries almost 3,600 passengers and over 1,300 crew. The ship is 1,083 feet long, 217 feet high, and has 19 decks. Her service speed is 22 knots, enabling her to cover long distances quickly. The ship has 1,780 guest cabins and over a dozen dining venues.

The Royal Princess was launched in June 2013 and is a new class for Princess Cruises. The cruise line has included many of the desirable features from its Grand Princess class of ships, but has added some new ones that cruise travelers will also enjoy like the SeaWalk and the Princess Water Color Fantasy.

As seen in the photo above, the Royal Princess has a lovely exterior. This article covers some of the features on the outdoor decks.

Pool Deck and Giant Outdoor Movie Screen

The Royal Princess Lido Deck (deck 16) has a large rectangular swimming pool (Fountain Pool) and a circular plunge pool. It also has hot tubs and lots of lounge chairs. The giant movie screen is used throughout the day for music videos, sports, movies, and other programming. At night, the pool area is transformed into a "Movies Under the Stars" venue. The already comfortable lounge chairs are topped with cushiony tops and blankets.

Popcorn and drinks add to the "drive-in movie" feel. (Except I didn't see anyone making out.)

The movies cover several genres and some evenings there are two movies--one about 7:15 and the other at about 10:30. The resolution of the high-definition screen is so good that movies show up well, even if it's not completely dark. The outdoor atmosphere, stars overhead, breeze, and warm blankets add to the movie experience. One movie everyone loved to see outdoors was "Gravity". Unsurprisingly, the big starlit sky over the screen was a perfect ambiance for this exciting movie.

Let's look at some more photos of the outdoor decks on the Royal Princess.

Plunge Pool and Fountain Pool Island

This large plunge pool on the Royal Princess is shallow enough for children. The wooden stage-like area is the Fountain Pool island, which features a water and light show in the evenings at the Princess Water Color Fantasy. Some of the dancing fountains shoot 33 feet into the air!

Retreat Pool in the Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is the private, adults-only area of the Royal Princess. It's found on deck 17 forward. The Sanctuary features luxury lounges, cabanas, hot tubs, a bar. and the Retreat Pool. There is a daily fee to use the Sanctuary, and an additional fee to rent one of the optional VIP cabanas.

On either side of deck 16 (Lido deck) on the Royal Princess is the SeaWalk, an over-the-water glass walkway that extends out over the ocean. On the starboard side, the SeaWalk extends out 28 feet, and on the port side is the exciting SeaView Bar seen in the photo above. The SeaWalks have views of the sea or the Promenade deck 128 feet below.

Standing on one of the glass floor panels and looking down is very eerie. It's even more disconcerting when the Royal Princess is sailing. It was fun to just watch other guests walk through one of the two SeaWalks on deck 16.
